WHAT A GENDER.

WOMAN EH EHH? EHHH!!!!!

March 8th is the day reserved internationally to celebrate the woman and we are no exemption from that. Today’s society is obviously drifting so much so that it scared me that sooner or later they will raise a campaign to call it a female day, you know why? In a world where to be born to a particular sex or gender does not necessarily mean u have to be, that means males can choose to become female but I wonder if they really can become WOMEN.

Today, as a true Bamenda woman, I celebrate in my “TOGHU”

“The question isn’t who’s going to let me; it’s who’s going to stop me.” – Ayn Rand

This year’s theme, “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality,”

Just a few years back when I moved to the united states of America, everyone especially women both young and old where all drifting to health care, nursing was the it but today the it is IT (information technology).

When I saw the theme for this year’s woman’s day, I could not agree more with it. Whoever picked it should take a beer on my tab. It goes with The beautiful slogan on the streets Women In IT.

For many years now, the digital world/information technology has been mostly dominated by Indians, then the caucasian communities but recently I am glad to see our African communities stump the industry with so much force. if we keep up at this rate we will take over India in the next few years. Did I hear someone say Amen?

“Continue to embrace the things that make you unique even if it makes others uncomfortable. You are enough.” – Janelle Monáe

A few months ago I was fortunate to get my foot in the digital world, I worked with 3 IT teams which were made up of about 8 team members so collectively 24 team members and only one of the 24 was a woman. The industry is obviously male-dominated. At the start of this academic year, I picked engineering as one of my daughter’s electives at school. I really want her to get her foot wet at this age, she came back after the first day of engineering class and told me she does not like the class. I insisted she had to keep attending the class. Can you imagine that the next week she went ahead and change her schedule, switched engineering and took on skills for living and only informed me later? I was so upset and displayed my African mother side of me but after calming down I asked her why she gave up the course, her answer was that the class was made up only of Indian boys and she was the only girl so she was not comfortable and skills for a living have more girls. Well, sad.

“I raise up my voice not so I can shout, but so that those without a voice can be heard. We cannot succeed when half of us are held back.” – Malala Yousafzai

Dedicating this blog to a woman I adore, my adorable mother.

For us women to have gender equality, we must not only sharpen our innovative and technology skills, but we must also raise our girls to know that the present and future is a technology and the WOMAN is the FUTURE. Let us raise women who will stand in crowds full of very intelligent men and teach them new and developing concepts in technology as the world keep evolving! Let us encourage ourselves and most especially our daughters who are the FUTURE to know that technology is not only a man‘s field, it is Digit ALL.
